Over the past few weeks, a new system has emerged. The girls now have their very own cards, used to "check-out" a book, a game or an activity. Each girl must first complete her homework to activate her card. Several girls are chosen every week to act as the Responsables. This means that they keep track of the cards, the books in the library and the games, they take note of who is using what and remind their friends to return these items so that they can continue to use them on a daily basis. This new way of interacting with their shared possessions paired with the positions of leadership, fosters individual responsibility as well as offers opportunities for the girls to work together within their own play.

The Rotary Club of Ashland Oregon stopped by Buen Pastor earlier this week to deliver some great news: they've awarded Buen Pastor $6000 USD! We'll be using the money for educational purposes. $300 has been specified to build the library collection. Ashland, Oregon, is Guanajuato's Sister City. Buen Pastor has been very fortunate to have developed a relationship with our Rotarian friends there. Friday's book luncheon was a success! Thanks to the fine ladies of San Miguel de Allende, we now have twenty older girl's books and seventeen younger girl's books in our collection paid for with the donations received. Plans are now in the making to design and build a bookshelf to house the library in the learning lab so that the girls and volunteers have easy access to them. A warm thank you to the people who helped pull this off... you know who you are! In the past few months, we've added four new computers and one used computer to the learning lab. This coming week, we'll be adding two more new computers, thanks to a gift from the Ashland Rotary Club. Fernando has installed educational programs on the computers in the areas of mathematics, typing, learning English, and brain teasers. He plans on installing more programs on the themes of history, the environment, and geography. This past week, Fernando and Tere worked together to create a schedule. Setting a structure for the girls has been extremely helpful in making sure everyone gets a turn to work on the programs. Isang, our volunteer, has been coming during computer time to help the girls and monitor the lab. We look forward to building this program. We certainly feel it's off to a good start! We're happy to report that Buen Pastor has been awarded $1000 by the DoJiggy Giving Program ! Some of the funds will go to support Lori's work with acupuncture and the rest will continue building our fledgling computer lab and library. Thanks DoJiggy for supporting our educational efforts at Buen Pastor! Think of all the homework 27 girls generate. It's certainly more than one computer can accommodate. Thanks to a generous donation of $1000, Fernando was able to purchase two new computers and two new excellent quality monitors from a Cyber Cafe. He installed the computers this week delighting everyone with a real chance to finish their homework! |
